It’ll be a really strange and exciting movie for an audience, and there’s nothing quite like it. Kaylie and Tim begin hallucinating by seeing younger versions of each other. The biggest misfortune in Oculus is that it's almost a good movie. While there are some solid scares and creepy scenes, considering the pieces, they never amount to much.

Alan also experiences a moment of lucidity and kills himself by forcing Tim to pull the trigger of the gun and shoot him, causing a small crack in the corner of the mirror in the process. Smart, scary stuff. We've seen what happens when an idea is run into the ground with numerous (and quickly produced) sequels.
Leaving much of this ambiguous for the viewer, the film is a fully realized thought experiment about paranormal investigations, and how much of these characters' actions can be blamed on this mirror's influence, or their own mental illness.

Tim activates the kill switch, realizing too late and unable to see that Kaylie stood in its path, and he has killed her.
