Despite this, nearly 250 years ago, the French under the Marquis de Montcalm lay siege to Fort William Henry until finally it surrendered on August 9, 1757. Fort William Henry - Built on the site of two previous forts, the stone structure here was built in 1907 as part of the 300th Anniversary of Colonial Pemaquid. A restored 18th Century log fortress originally built in 1755 by Major-General William Johnson during the French and Indian War, Fort William Henry served as the northern defense for the British army against the French military forces advancing from Canada into the colonies along the Lake Champlain-Hudson River Valley. The British military strategists designed the fort as a key installation in the northern defense of the colony of New York to serve as a launching point for future military operations against the threatening French empire to the north, and to guard the portage between the waters of Lake George and the Hudson River to prevent any large scale French invasion. After being burned to the ground and covered with sand by the French General the Marquis de Montcalm 1757, the Fort remained untouched until restoration began in 1952.
