"Empty" is truly a one-of-a-kind book (at least to me) with the personal story of a young girl going through an eating disorder, constant feeling of emptiness, and dissatisfaction with her appearance. Empty is vapid, zero, of no interest. A definite must read. She glosses over her adult years and I wish she'd have spent more time on that because it does seem like she's still in the midst of a disorder (though not as bad as it was I guess?). Susan Burton does something that very few people are able to do: Seamlessly construct a memoir that is a coming-of-age story that explores the beginnings and the extent of a terrible disease.
See if your friends have read any of Susan Burton's books Her writing has appeared in the New York Times Magazine, Slate, The New Yorker, and others. That was some of the most relief I could get in life, was being empty. There is ample literature on the impact of lookism and the prevalence of negative stereotypes about fat people in our culture.

While I didn't end up engaging in disordered eating behavior(s) again, I sort of wanted to when the author would describe the positive emotions tied up in restriction, thoughts like, "oh, I remember that feeling fondly... maybe I should X, Y, Z... OK brain, fun thought, but move on".
This book was enlightening in some aspects but I wish there would have been more about her personal relationships and how her relationship with food affected them. We are experiencing technical difficulties.
