Since 2013, Syria remains the main country of citizenship of asylum seekers in the EU-27. Refugees are required to apply for Lawful Permanent Resident (“green card”) status one year after being admitted, and asylees may apply for green card status one year after their grant of asylum. More than three quarters (77.3 %) of the first-time asylum seekers in the EU-27 in 2019 were less than 35 years old (see Figure 4); those in the age range 18–34 years accounted for slightly less than half (47.0 %) of the total number of first-time applicants, while almost one third (30.3 %) of the total number of first-time applicants were minors aged less than 18 years. Decisions made at the first instance resulted in 206 000 persons being granted protection status, while a further 91 000 received protection status on appeal.
