A good novel that portrays how a man learns about forgiveness, tolerance and second chances as he gets to grips with his own mortality. I recently purchased several copies of this book for our book club. I made a cup of tea, cozied up with my favorite throw in an easy chair, and entered into War time England. I certainly had a crying good time! Neville Shute is master storyteller and this is clearly one of his very best. The novel deals fairly with the question of racism within the US forces during World War II and portrays black characters with great sympathy and support. Interracial marriage, racial equality, social justice, religion, death, life, and fairness are all explored in an endearing manner that makes this read yet another in his long cadre of poignant works.
